Carpet provides the "base" for decor in an entire
room. In addition to beautifying a room, it absorbs sound
and provides the comfort of walking on a soft surface. Thus,
it has the built-in incentive for the owner to preserve its
initial appearnace and condition for as long as possible
There is a wide variety of carpet construction avvailable
today, each designed for a particular area and traffic condition.
The appearance and service life of a carpet can be altered
significantly by foot traffic, surface debris, and embedded
dirt. Therefore, it is essential that:
- The carpet purchased be of good quality with regards to
material, filament fibre cross section, pile density, and
construction.
- The carpet be selected for an area appropriate to the
traffic condition for which it was designed.
- The various types of dirt and debris that collect on and
within the carpet be removed on a regular basis with an
effective vaccum cleaner
A vacuum cleaner with power agitation provides the best carpet
cleaning available today.
How often a vacuum cleaner should be used on a carpet depends
upon where the carpet is installed. Carpet near an outside
door will require more frequent vacuuming than carpet in a
bedroom. The amount and type of dirt and debris appearing
on the carpet and the traffic passing over it in these two
locations will obviously idffer. Generally, a vacuum cleaner
should be used when the carpet appears unsightly because of
dirt and debris or because the pile is croshed or matted.
In all cases, the carpet should be will vacuumed at least
once a week.
Some individuals prefere to vacuum their carpet daily, because
vacuuming daily or several times a week is more effective
in deeping the dirt and debris accumulation at a low level.
Frequent vacuuming of most carpet is better than allowing
a long period between cleanings. When dirt and debris appear
on the carpet, they should be removed as soon as possible
and not be permitted to be ground in by foot traffic.
Despite regular use f a vacuum cleaner, carpet, particularly
light coloured carpet, may become dull and drab. This is the
result of soiling caused by dirt and debris. Such appearance
changes occer more frequently under heavy traffic or in dusty
stmospheres. Appearance renewal can be accomplished (if the
carpet has not been neglected to the point where fibre damage
has occurred) by using:
1. Personally owned or company owned carpet cleaning equipment
(shampoo-polisher, etc.)
2. Rental carpet-cleaning equipment
3. "On location" professional cleaning
4. "In-plant" professional cleaning
